German Aerospace Center 3D Prints Mars Robot Prototype

Posted Date 06/27/17

The German Aerospace Center is preparing for its own mission to Mars utilizing Stratasys’ Fortus 900mc Production 3D printer. The authority has built a prototype of the TransRoPorter robot, which it designed for an unmanned mission to the Red Planet, to take place after four to five years. According to the team in charge of the project, the Fortus 900mc Production significantly reduced the time needed for the construction of the working prototype, which has in turn taken it ahead of schedule with the testing. Of course, 3D printing the prototype was also substantially cheaper than building it the traditional way and it also offered greater accuracy in the way the elements fit together – something essential for Mars missions.
