Is HP Locking Printer Users Out Again?

Posted Date 09/25/17

Several tech media in Europe last week warned that HP has once again activated a feature on a number of its printer models that locks the user out if the printer is loaded with a third-party ink cartridge. Although the company denied the reports, saying “this feature has not been reactivated,” the original media report, which was republished on multiple websites, invited users to report on any issues they are having with their inkjet printers.

Last year, HP angered its customers by secretly slipping in a feature in a firmware update that started disabling printers equipped with third-party cartridges. The devices stopped working and users were forced to buy HP original cartridges at much higher prices. The public backlash forced HP to disable the feature.
